~Learn About Fell Ponies!~

About Us  Megan began her journey into breeding fell ponies with an intense, seven-week education in Cumbria at the well-respected Littletree Stud. She was determined to begin a breeding program that would be an asset to the fell pony breed and the North American fell pony community in particular. To this end, she knew that it would be necessary to acquire a solid, practical knowledge of fell ponies. She spent these seven weeks studying fell pony conformation, movement, and behavior in a full-time stud environment and under expert guidance from the Woolley family. We look forward to building on this foundation of learning in the future at our own farm.
Ambleside Farm is located currently in Van Alstyne, TX, a small Texas town just forty-five minutes north of Dallas.  Our family has been involved with horses through several generations, and has been josieparticipating in the exciting world of carriage driving since the later 1990's.  Although Ambleside is presently a single farm for all intents and purposes, the difference in location and focus between family members spurs the use of the plural "Farms" under formal circumstances.

History & Focus  A colorful assortment of horses and ponies call Ambleside home.  The center of our farm, however, are our fell ponies.  We began our journey towards breeding fell ponies when we met and fell in love with one at a carriage driving show in North Carolina.  Our admiration for these beautiful, intelligent British ponies grew as we spent time researching and learning about the breed, leading up to the purchase of a much-loved mare, Midnightvalley Poppy.  Poppy was our sole fell for several years, during which time we competed in combined driving with her and grew acquainted with the fell breed.  Although Poppy has been sold on, she remains responsible for our continuation into the training and breeding of these rare ponies.  In her wake come the phenomenal proven grey stallion Lunesdale Mercury and incomparable bay foundation mare Lune Valley Lauren. With the acquisition of this poppyoutstanding breeding pair, Ambleside will continue to contribute to the preservation and promotion of the rare Fell Pony.

Philosophy & Goals  Here at Ambleside, we believe that the true test of a horse or pony is its attitude towards its work, whatever discipline it is bred for.  Our horses and ponies are bred, therefore, for excellence of conformation and movement to supply the physical ability to perform, but of equal importance they are bred for a sensible temperament and good work ethic.  All of our animals will be trained in at least one discipline, our most common at the moment being carriage driving. We adhere to the school of thought that above all else a pony should bring extra happiness and contentment to their owner. With this in mind, we strive to produce ponies with the exceptional qualities of mind and body that will enable them to do just that.
Our long-term goal is, as with any rare breed, to consistently produce quality ponies whose type and character does not pheonixdeviate from the original prototype of the native British Fell Pony.  In the meantime, we hope to present our happy, working ponies in a variety of capacities in order to inform the public about Fell Ponies and all their many talents.  As our herd grows, we will also begin providing trained adult fell ponies for sale.

Membership  We are currently members-in-good standing with the Fell Pony Society (mother society), the Fell Pony Society of North America, The Fell Pony Society and Conservancy of the Americas, the American Miniature Horse Association, The American Shetland Pony Club, the American Driving Society, and our local driving club, The North Texas Whips!
